Dr. Dennis A. Humphrey, Ed.D.

Dennis Humphrey is a criminal justice professional with extensive expertise in adult corrections and addiction treatment. He served for a number of years as the associate commissioner for programs and treatment in the Massachusetts Department of Correction; as the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Committee on Criminal Justice; and as the Deputy Superintendent of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. Dr. Humphrey has served on the faculties of Boston University, University of Massachusetts, and Emerson College and as a lecturer at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Dr. Humphrey has been on the forefront of implementing services for incarcerated men and women for more than 35 years. His work establishing residential substance abuse treatment (RSAT) programs began in 1984 when he collaborated with Dr. Steve Valle to develop the Commonwealth’s first residential program for drunk drivers. This model was then replicated to provide treatment services for men and women with substance abuse issues who were serving sentences in high security facilities. In 1992, Dr. Humphrey began a collaborative effort with Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School in the development of a mindfulness training program for inmates with a history of addiction.
